Yoiyoi ni nugite waga nuru karigoromo kakete omowanu toki no ma mo nashi - Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

宵々に脱ぎて我が寝る狩衣
かけて思はぬ時の間もなし

Roma-ji: Yoiyoi ni nugite waga nuru karigoromo kakete omowanu toki no ma mo nashi
English Translation: Night after night I
take off my hunting robe and
hang it before sleep;
there is not one moment when
you are not hung upon my heart.
Meaning: Like the hunting robe I take off and hang up every night before I sleep, you hang upon my heart; there is not a single moment when I do not think of you.

Using as a preface the hunting robe that he takes off and hangs on a rack each night before sleeping, the poet overlays in the single word kakete the senses of hanging a robe and keeping someone in one's heart, and says there is no moment when he does not think of the beloved. An everyday act is brought into the poem as a scene and turned toward unceasing love. From here on in this book, four poems by Tomonori follow.
Ki no Tomonori was a poet of the early Heian period, the son of Ki no Aritomo and a cousin of Ki no Tsurayuki. He served as Senior Private Secretary and was appointed one of the compilers of the Kokinshū, but died before its completion. He is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.

First line, "yoiyoi ni": every night, night after night.
Second line, "nugite waga nuru": taking off one's robe to sleep, modifying "hunting robe" in the third line.
Third line, "karigoromo": originally a robe worn for hunting, in the Heian period everyday wear for nobles. The first three lines form a preface, leading from hanging up a robe to kakete in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "kakete omowanu": kakete is a pun on "hanging" the removed hunting robe on a rack and "keeping" someone in one's heart.
Fifth line, "toki no ma mo nashi": toki no ma is a brief moment, closing with "there is not even a moment when I do not think of you." After the waterside scenes up to the previous poem, 592, the scene shifts to the familiar image of a robe.
