夢にだに逢ふこと難くなりゆくは
我や寝を寝ぬ人や忘るる

Roma-ji: Yume ni dani au koto kataku nariyuku wa ware ya i o nenu hito ya wasururu
English Translation: That even in dreams
it grows harder now to meet,
is it that I
cannot sleep, or is it that
you have forgotten me?
Meaning: Even in dreams it is growing harder to meet you. Is it because I cannot sleep, or because you have forgotten me?

Headnote: "Topic unknown."
The poem asks why it has become hard to meet even in dreams, dividing the cause in two: is it that I cannot sleep, or that you have forgotten? It was believed that a person who thought of you appeared in your dreams, so failing to meet in dreams carries the fear of a change of heart. Taking up the "dream path" of the preceding poem, dream poems continue.

In the first line dani means "at least," or "even in dreams, let alone in waking life."
The second line, "hard to meet," continues into nariyuku, a gradual change toward not meeting.
The third line, "that it is becoming so," sets up the two reasons in the lower verse.
In the fourth line i o nu means to sleep; ya asks a question resolved by the negative attributive nu: is it that I do not sleep?
The last line pairs its ya with the fourth line: is it that you forget? Wasururu resolves it. The fourth and fifth lines form a parallel pair.
