今はとて我が身時雨にふりぬれば
ことのはさへに移ろひにけり

Roma-ji: Ima wa tote waga mi shigure ni furinureba kotonoha sae ni utsuroinikeri
English Translation: "It is over now,"
as my body in the rain
of autumn has grown old,
even the leaves of your words
have faded and turned their hue
Meaning: Thinking it is over now: as I have aged like leaves drenched in the autumn showers, even your words have faded and changed their color, like the leaves of the trees.

Komachi laments that as she has aged, like leaves in the autumn showers, even her lover's words have faded and changed like leaves. Furu means both "fall" and "grow old," and kotonoha both "words" and "leaves," layering the grief of age and a change of heart upon the scene of leaves reddening and scattering in the rain. The next poem is Ono no Sadaki's reply, and the two form an exchange.
The author, "Ono no Komachi," is Ono no Komachi. One theory makes her the daughter of Ono no Yoshizane, a district official in Dewa, but her lineage is uncertain. She is thought to have served at court in the reigns of Emperors Ninmyō and Montoku, and is one of the Six Poetic Immortals and the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.

The first line, "thinking it is over now," sounds a foreboding of the end.
The second line, "my body in the showers," names the rain that colors and scatters leaves, leading to age and a change of heart.
In the third line furi is a pivot word, meaning both the rain falling and growing old. Nureba gives the established condition: since I have grown old.
In the fourth line kotonoha means both the lover's words and leaves colored by rain, and sae ni adds "even."
The last line layers leaves changing color with words fading through a change of heart, closing with the completion and exclamation of ni keri.
