君が植ゑしひとむら薄虫の音の
しげき野辺ともなりにけるかな

Roma-ji: Kimi ga ueshi hitomura susuki mushi no ne no shigeki nobe to mo narinikeru kana
English Translation: The single clump
of susuki that you planted
has become a field
where the voices of insects
now ring out thick and constant.
Meaning: The single clump of pampas grass you planted has become a wild field, overgrown and loud with the voices of insects.

Headnote: "The quarters where Fujiwara no Toshimoto had lived as Middle Captain of the Right Inner Palace Guards had been left empty after his death. Late one autumn night, passing on the way back from somewhere, the poet looked in and saw that the garden plantings had grown thick and wild. Having served there in earlier days, he composed this thinking of the past"
The quarters where Fujiwara no Toshimoto had lived as Middle Captain of the Right Guards stood empty after his death. Late one autumn night the poet glanced in while passing and saw the garden grown wild and overgrown; having once served there, he recalled the past and composed this poem. The single clump of pampas grass the master planted has become a field alive with insects, and the neglected garden carries the loneliness of losing him.
Fujiwara no Toshimoto, named in the headnote, was the elder brother of Fujiwara no Takafuji and the father of Fujiwara no Kanesuke.
The author, Miharu no Arisuke, was an official of the early Heian period who is said to have served Toshimoto.

The first line, "that you planted," refers to the late Toshimoto and has six syllables, one more than usual.
The second line, "a clump of pampas grass," uses hitomura, a single cluster, for the few stalks the master planted.
The third line, "the insects' voices," names the cries of autumn insects.
The fourth line, "a field thick with," uses shigeki to mean both overgrown with grass and filled with incessant insect cries.
The last line, "it has become," closes with an exclamation.
