玉垂れの小瓶やいづらこよろぎの
磯の波分けおきに出でにけり

Roma-ji: Tamadare no kogame ya izura koyorogi no iso no nami wake oki ni idenikeri
English Translation: That little jar
hung with jewels, where is it?

Meaning: Where has that little jar gone? Parting the waves of the Koyorogi shore, it seems to have sailed out into the open sea.

Headnote: "In the Kanpyō era, men serving in the courtiers' hall sent a jar to the Empress Dowager's quarters asking for some of her wine; the chamberlains laughed, carried the jar before her, and sent no reply. When the messenger returned and reported this, the poet sent this to the chamberlains"
In the reign of Emperor Uda, the men serving in the courtiers' hall sent a jar to the Empress Dowager's quarters asking for her leftover wine, but the chamberlains laughed, carried the jar before her, and never replied. Hearing this from the messenger, the poet sent this poem to the chamberlains, jokingly pressing for the wine by saying the jar has sailed off to sea and vanished.
The author, "Toshiyuki no Ason," is Fujiwara no Toshiyuki, son of Fujiwara no Fujimaro, who rose to Captain of the Right Military Guards. He was known as a fine calligrapher and is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals.
The "Empress's palace" of the headnote is thought to refer to Princess Hanshi, mother of Emperor Uda.

First line "tamadare no" means strung with jewels hanging on a cord, used here like a pillow word to adorn the "little jar."
Second line "kogame ya izura": izura asks where something has gone, and the poem pauses here.
Third line "koyorogi no" is the poetic place Koyurugi in Sagami Province, calling up a shore of rough waves.
Fourth line "iso no nami wake" humorously pictures the jar pushing through the waves.
Fifth line "oki ni idenikeri": oki is a pivot word joining "the open sea" and "placed before her." The complaint that the jar was left before the empress and never came back is told as a jar drifting out to sea.
