Akanaku ni madaki mo tsuki no kakururu ka yama no ha nigete irezu mo aranamu - Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

飽かなくにまだきも月の隠るるか
山の端逃げて入れずもあらなむ

Roma-ji: Akanaku ni madaki mo tsuki no kakururu ka yama no ha nigete irezu mo aranamu
English Translation: Not yet sated,
and already the moon
slips out of sight?
If only the mountain's rim
would flee and not let it in!
Meaning: I have not yet had my fill, and must the moon hide so soon? If only the rim of the mountains would flee and refuse to let it in.
Commentary: Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Poems I 884

Headnote: "Composed when, having accompanied Prince Koretaka on a hunt and returned to their lodging, they drank and talked all night, and as the moon of the eleventh day was about to set, the prince, drunk, was about to go inside"
After accompanying Prince Koretaka on a hunt, they returned to their lodging and drank and talked all night; as the moon of the eleventh day was about to set, the drunken prince made to go inside to rest, and the poet composed this. Overlaying the setting moon with the prince, he holds him back, wishing the mountain rim would flee and not let the moon in.
The author, "Narihira no Ason," is Ariwara no Narihira, son of Prince Abo, himself a son of Emperor Heizei, and one of the Six Poetic Immortals. Prince Koretaka was the eldest son of Emperor Montoku; his mother was Ki no Shizuko.
This poem also appears in the Nagisa-no-in story of Episode 82 of The Tales of Ise.

First line "akanaku ni" is the nominalized negative naku with ni, "though not yet satisfied." It begins in the same spirit as "akazu shite" in the preceding poem, 883.
Second line "madaki mo tsuki no": madaki means already, before its time.
Third line "kakururu ka" is a question with a note of lament, and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line "yama no ha nigete" is the bold fancy of the mountain rim itself fleeing, likening the moon to the prince and the rim to the inner room.
Fifth line "irezu mo aranamu": namu is a final particle of wishing toward another, "I wish it would not let it in."
