Itsushika to mataku kokoro o hagi ni agete ama no kawara o kyō ya wataramu - Kokin Wakashu(English Translation & Meaning)

いつしかとまたく心をはぎに上げて
天の河原を今日や渡らむ

Roma-ji: Itsushika to mataku kokoro o hagi ni agete ama no kawara o kyō ya wataramu
English Translation: Eager, oh so soon,
he hitches up his hurried heart
high above his shins,
across the Riverbed of Heaven
will he wade over today?
Meaning: His heart racing with impatience, hitched up to his shins like the hem of a robe, will the Herdsman wade across the Riverbed of Heaven already today?

Headnote: "Composed on the spirit of Tanabata on the sixth day of the Seventh Month"
Written on the sixth day of the Seventh Month, the eve of Tanabata, the poem imagines the Herdsman Star unable to wait for his tryst. The comic touch lies in describing his eager heart as hitched up to the shins, like a robe tucked up for wading. The witty suggestion that he might cross a day early, on the sixth, gives the poem its haikai flavor.
The author, "Fujiwara no Kanesuke no Ason," is Fujiwara no Kanesuke. The son of Fujiwara no Toshimoto, he rose to Middle Counselor and was called the Tsutsumi Middle Counselor because his mansion stood on the Kamo River embankment. He was the great-grandfather of Murasaki Shikibu and is one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "Itsushika to," expresses longing: soon, oh soon.
Second line, "mataku kokoro o," uses the verb "mataku," to be in a hurry, for a heart rushing toward the meeting.
Third line, "hagi ni agete," means tucking the hem up to the shins, a playful way of speaking of the heart as if it were dressing to wade. The line has an extra syllable.
Fourth line, "ama no kawara o," is the riverbed of the River of Heaven that the Herdsman crosses in the Tanabata legend.
Fifth line, "kyō ya wataramu," pairs interrogative "ya" with conjectural "mu." Will he cross today, the sixth, without waiting for the seventh?
