秋風にほころびぬらし藤袴
つづりさせてふきりぎりす鳴く

Roma-ji: Akikaze ni hokorobinu rashi fujibakama tsuzuri sase chō kirigirisu naku
English Translation: In the autumn wind
it seems they have come unstitched,
the fujibakama—
"mend the seams," the crickets cry,
"stitch them up," they chirp and sing
Meaning: The autumn wind seems to have split the seams of the "fujibakama," the purple trousers of the thoroughwort, for the crickets are crying "tsuzuri sase," mend them, stitch them up.

Headnote: "A poem from the poetry contest held at the Empress's palace in the Kanpyō era"
This poem was composed for the poetry contest at the Empress's palace in the Kanpyō era. The thoroughwort, "fujibakama," whose name means "wisteria trousers," is treated as a garment: its blossoms opening in the autumn wind are said to have split at the seams, and the crickets cry "tsuzuri sase," mend them. "Kirigirisu" here refers to the modern cricket, whose chirping was popularly heard as "stitch the shoulders, stitch the hems, mend the seams," a call to prepare for winter.
The author, "Ariwara Muneyana," is Ariwara no Muneyana. He was a son of Ariwara no Narihira and served as Assistant Commander of the Left Military Guards and governor of Chikuzen.

First line, "Akikaze ni," gives the cause of the splitting.
Second line, "hokorobinu rashi," is a pivot word joining buds opening and seams coming undone. "Rashi" marks a grounded inference, and the poem breaks here.
Third line, "fujibakama," is one of the seven flowers of autumn; the word "hakama," trousers, in its name lets it be treated as clothing.
Fourth line, "tsuzuri sase chō," renders "tsuzuri sase," mend the seams, as the insect's cry. "Chō" contracts "to iu."
Fifth line, "kirigirisu naku," names the modern cricket. Splitting seams, trousers, and stitching form a set of associated words for clothing.
