さかしらに夏は人まね笹の葉の
さやぐ霜夜をわが独り寝る

Roma-ji: Sakashira ni natsu wa hitomane sasa no ha no sayagu shimoyo o waga hitori nuru
English Translation: Being clever, I
aped others in the summertime,
now the bamboo leaves
rustle through the frosty night
where I lie down all alone
Meaning: In summer I cleverly followed others' example and slept alone; now, on a frosty night when the bamboo leaves rustle, I still sleep by myself.

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
In summer's heat the poet affected to sleep alone in imitation of others, only to end up still sleeping alone on frosty nights; the poem mocks itself. Contrasting sleeping alone in summer and in winter, it conveys loneliness with a comic touch.
The author is unknown and is recorded as "Anonymous."

First line, "Sakashira ni," means cleverly, in a know-it-all way.
Second line, "natsu wa hitomane," means in summer I imitated others in sleeping alone. The poem breaks here.
Third line, "sasa no ha no," is the subject of "sayagu" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "sayagu shimoyo o," is a winter night when bamboo leaves rustle in the wind, contrasting with "summer" in the second line.
Fifth line, "waga hitori nuru," ends in the attributive form, leaving a lingering tone.
