it rises and swiftly sets,
the crescent moon—
broken like it, my heart brooding,
such is the season of my days

- Like the crescent moon that rises in the early evening and soon sets, looking as if split in two, these are days when my heart is broken with brooding.

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
From the split-looking shape of the crescent moon the poet draws out a brooding so intense that the heart seems to break. The first three lines form a preface leading to "warete." Linking the moon's shape to inner turmoil gives the poem its haikai quality.
The author is unknown and is recorded as "Anonymous."
First line, "Yoi no ma ni," means in the early evening.
Second line, "idete irinuru," describes the crescent moon rising early and soon setting.
Third line, "mikazuki no," completes the preface of the first three lines leading to "warete."
Fourth line, "warete mono omou," is a pivot word joining the split look of the crescent and a heart breaking in turmoil. The line has an extra syllable.
Fifth line, "koro ni mo aru kana," uses exclamatory "kana": such are these days. The line has an extra syllable.
