四極山うち出でて見れば笠結ひの
島漕ぎ隠る棚無し小舟

Roma-ji: Shihatsu yama uchiidete mireba kasayui no shima kogikakuru tananashi obune
English Translation: Mount Shihatsu:
coming out to look, I see
by Kasayui
isle, rowing out of sight,
a small boat without side-boards.
Meaning: Crossing Mount Shihatsu and coming out to the open view, I see a little boat without side-boards rowing out of sight behind the isle of Kasayui.

Headnote: "Court Songs of the Bureau: A Shihatsuyama-buri Song"
Crossing a mountain and coming out where the sea opens below, the singer sees a small boat rowing out of sight behind an island. It is a descriptive song that catches the moment a view opens up on a journey. No author is recorded.
The Ōutadokoro, or Bureau of Court Song, was the office that taught and preserved the ōuta, the songs performed at palace banquets and Shinto rites. Book Twenty of the Kokin Wakashū gathers such songs, arranged as court songs of the Bureau, songs of the kagura, and songs of the East.
It is nearly identical to a poem by Takechi no Kurohito in Book Three of the Man'yōshū, "Crossing Mount Shihatsu, I look out: behind the isle of Kasanui a boat without side-boards rows from sight," and represents that poem handed down as a song.

The first line, "Mount Shihatsu," names the mountain of the song; it has been placed both at Sumiyoshi in Settsu and in Mikawa.
The second line, "coming out and looking," means emerging where the view opens after crossing the mountain, uchi being a prefix.
The third line, "of Kasayui," leads to the island's name. The Man'yōshū has Kasanui, the word shifting as the song was handed down.
The fourth line, "rowing behind the isle," catches the boat as it slips from view into the island's shadow.
The last line, "a small boat without side-boards," means a little craft with no planking along its gunwales; ending on the noun leaves the receding boat lingering in the mind.
