Book One Miscellaneous Poems 80
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "A poem from another text, composed when the court moved from the Fujiwara capital to the Nara Palace — envoy"
An envoy vowing to keep coming for all ages to the house newly built in the Heijō capital, and asking not to be thought forgetful. The long poem told of the hard journey to Nara by way of the Hatsuse and Saho rivers, and the toil of coming and going through cold nights without rest to build the house, closing with the wish that the Sovereign, too, would come there for a thousand ages. The envoy takes this up and pledges unchanging devotion to the new house.
The left note says that the author is unknown. The poem is thought to be by someone involved in the construction that accompanied the move of the capital.
The first line, aoniyoshi, is a pillow word for Nara, said by some to derive from the blue-green pigment (aoni) obtained from the Nara hills.
The second line, "at the house in Nara," refers to the house built with such labor in the new capital, as told in the long poem.
The third line, "for ten thousand ages," takes up the long poem's closing "for a thousand ages" and extends it further.
In the fourth line, mu expresses intent: "I too will come and go." It is exactly the same as the last line of the long poem, binding long poem and envoy tightly together. The poem breaks here.
In the last line, na forbids: "do not think I will forget." It closes with a pledge of unchanging devotion to the new house and to its master.
