Aokoma ga agaki o hayami kumoi ni zo imo ga atari o sugite kinikeru

English Translation
My dark horse's hooves
are so swift, so quick to go,
far off in the clouds
the place where my dear one lives
I have passed and left behind.
Meaning
My dark horse moved so swiftly that I have passed far beyond the place where my beloved lives, until it lies away among the clouds.
Commentary
Book Two Love Poems 136

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems by Kakinomoto no Asomi Hitomaro when he parted from his wife in the province of Iwami and came up to the capital, two envoys"
Because his horse moved so fast, he laments, he has passed far beyond his wife's home before he knew it, until it lies among the distant clouds.
The sequence Hitomaro composed when he parted from his wife in Iwami and traveled up to the capital is known as the Iwami love poems and is famous as one of his masterpieces. This is the first of the two envoys attached to the long poem 135.
The author, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, was a court poet active in the reigns of Empress Jitō and Emperor Monmu. A master of the long poem and the elegy, he is the representative poet of the Man'yōshū and was later revered as the Saint of Poetry.
A note records a variant giving the last lines as "atari wa kakurikinikeru." Here the main text is followed.

In the first line, "aokoma ga," aokoma is a horse of dark, bluish-black color.
The second line, "agaki o hayami," uses the o ... mi construction to give a cause: because its hooves move so swiftly.
In the third line, "kumoi ni zo," kumoi means the place of the clouds, far away, and zo is a binding particle concluding in the attributive keru of the final line.
The fourth line, "imo ga atari o," means "the neighborhood where my wife lives."
The final line, "sugite kinikeru," means "I have come on past it," resolving the zo and closing with deep feeling.
