and so you tell me, my love—
but when we will meet,
if I do not know that day,
how can I not long for you?
Meaning
You tell me not to grieve, but how can I keep from longing for you when I do not know when we will meet again?
Commentary
Book Two Love Poems 140

Headnote: "A poem by Yosami no Otome, wife of Kakinomoto no Asomi Hitomaro, on parting from Hitomaro"
To her husband, who tells her not to grieve at their parting, she replies that she cannot help longing for him when she does not know when they will meet again.
According to the headnote, this is the poem of Hitomaro's wife, Yosami no Otome, on parting from him. Placed after the Iwami love poems, it shows the parting from the wife's side as well as the husband's.
The author, Yosami no Otome, was the wife of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro and is otherwise unknown. Some take her to be his wife in Iwami, others a wife in the capital.
This is the last poem in the section of love poems. Like 85 by Empress Iwa no Hime at the section's opening, it closes the section with a wife's longing for her husband.

The first line, "na omoi to," means "do not grieve," opening by quoting her husband's words.
The second line, "kimi wa iedomo," means "though you say so."
The third line, "awamu toki," means "the time when we shall meet."
In the fourth line, "itsu to shirite ka," ka is a rhetorical binding particle concluding in the attributive mu of the final line.
The final line, "aga koizu aramu," means "could I keep from longing? I cannot," using the rhetorical question to negate her husband's words.
