Book Two Elegies 163
Headnote: "Two poems composed by Princess Ōku when she came up to the capital from the Ise Shrine after the death of Prince Ōtsu"
Having returned to the capital after the death of her brother Prince Ōtsu, she laments that she should have stayed in Ise and wonders why she has come to a capital where he no longer lives.
A section heading reads "the reign of the Sovereign who ruled from the Fujiwara Palace," and according to the headnote this is the first of two poems from the time when Princess Ōku, released from her service at Ise after Ōtsu's death, came up to the capital. It conveys the sister's grief for a brother who was ordered to die on a charge of treason.
The author, Princess Ōku, was a daughter of Emperor Tenmu and the full elder sister of Prince Ōtsu. She served as the high priestess of the Ise Shrine. The headnote writes her name with different characters.
The first line, "kamukaze no," is a pillow word for Ise.
The second line, "ise no kuni ni mo," means "in the land of Ise."
In the third line, "aramashi o," mashi is counterfactual and o exclamatory: would that I had stayed. The poem pauses here.
In the fourth line, "nani shika kikemu," nani shika means "why," and kemu infers a past cause: why did I come? The fourth line of the next poem, 164, is identical.
The final line, "kimi mo aranaku ni," means "when you are no more," the same as the final line of 154 by Lady Ishikawa in this book.
