Book Two Elegies 233
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Poems composed in the ninth month, autumn, of the first year of Reiki, the year kinoto-u, at the time of the death of Prince Shiki, a poem in another text reads"
Calling to the autumn bush clover in the fields of Takamato not to scatter, the speaker resolves to gaze on it as a keepsake of the late Prince Shiki and remember him.
These are elegies on the death of Prince Shiki in the ninth month of the first year of Reiki (715). The long poem 230 mourns him by asking whether the funeral torches burning on Mount Takamato are a fire set to burn the fields. Prince Shiki was a son of Emperor Tenji and the father of the later Emperor Kōnin. This poem is appended as one transmitted in another text and appears to be a different form of 231. Where 231 imagines the bush clover with no one to see it, here the speaker himself will look on it as a keepsake, forming an inverted pair of flowers unseen and flowers watched.
The author is not named. Some take it, like 231, to be by Kasa no Kanamura, but this is not settled.
The first line, "takamato no," is the same first line as 231.
The second line, "nobe no akihagi," is also the same as the second line of 231.
In the third line, "na chiri so ne," na ... so ne is a prohibition with an added wish: please do not scatter. The poem pauses here.
The fourth line, "kimi ga katami ni," means "as a keepsake of our late lord."
In the final line, "mitsutsu shinowamu," mu expresses intention: I will look on it and remember him. It is the same as the final line of 225 by Yosami no Otome in this book.
