Book Three Miscellaneous Poems 250
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Eight travel poems by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro"
This is the second of the eight travel poems. Linking place names like a journey song, it tells how the boat bound west from Naniwa passed Minume in Settsu and neared Cape Nushima on Awaji Island. The rhythm of two pillow words conveys the boat's light progress. A left note gives a variant from another text: "Passing Otome, to the cape of Nushima of summer grass—here I take my lodging."
The eight travel poems form a sequence tracing, place by place, a sea voyage west from Naniwa through the Inland Sea and back toward Yamato. The first of them, poem 249, has a lower half whose reading is unresolved.
The poet, Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, was a court poet active from the reign of Jitō to that of Monmu. Master of both long and short poems, he was later revered as the "Saint of Poetry." His rank was low, and much of his life remains obscure.
First line "Where fine seaweed is reaped" is a pillow word for Minume, marking it as a shore where seaweed is gathered.
Second line "having passed Minume by": Minume was a port in Settsu, around today's Nada Ward in Kobe.
Third line "where the summer grass grows" is a pillow word for "field" (no), also suggesting a summer journey.
Fourth line "to the point of Nushima": the cape lies at the northwest of Awaji Island. The next poem's second line also names it, handing the place on through the sequence.
Fifth line "our boat has drawn near": the perfective nu states firmly that the boat has come close.
