Headnote: "A poem by Kasuga no Kurabito Oyu"
The poet fondly recalls a girl he met on the road to the market of Abe when he once traveled near Yakizu in Suruga. A single encounter on a journey has stayed with him, and he wonders how she fares now—a faint, wistful love. The market of Abe is thought to have been near present-day Shizuoka City.
The poet, Kasuga no Oyu, was originally a monk named Benki; in Taihō 1 (701) he returned to lay life and was given the name Kasuga no Kurabito Oyu. He later served as Assistant Governor of Hitachi, among other posts.
First line "to the land around Yakizu": Yakizu lay in Suruga, around present-day Yaizu, Shizuoka.
Second line "When I made my way": shika is the conditional of the past ki, with ba giving "when I went."
Third line "there in Suruga": naru means "in."
Fourth line "on the market road of Abe": ichiji is the road leading to the market of Abe, or the market street itself.
Fifth line "that girl I met, where is she now": ra is an affectionate suffix, and wa mo is a sigh of longing for one far away.
