Misago iru isomi ni ouru nanoriso no na wa norashiteyo oya wa shiru tomo

English Translation
Where the ospreys dwell,
growing round the rocky shore,
the "tell-not-your-name" weed—
yet do tell me now your name,
though your parents come to know.
Meaning
Like the seaweed nanoriso—"don't tell your name"—growing on the rocky shore where the ospreys live: no, do tell me your name, even if your parents find out.
Commentary
Book Three Miscellaneous Poems 362

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Six poems by Yamabe no Sukune Akahito"
This is the last of Yamabe no Akahito's six poems, closing the sequence. Playing on the seaweed nanoriso, whose name sounds like na nori so, "do not tell your name," it voices a suitor who begs a woman to tell him her name even if her parents should learn of it. In ancient times, a woman's telling her name to a man meant consent to marry. The first three lines form a preface leading to "name," turning the seascape into a love poem.
Yamabe no Akahito's six poems center on travel along the shores of Harima and Settsu, interweaving longing for home and love.
The poet, Yamabe no Akahito, was a court poet of the reign of Shōmu who composed many poems on royal excursions and excelled in clear, limpid landscape verse. Later ages ranked him with Kakinomoto no Hitomaro as a "Saint of Poetry."

First line "Where the ospreys dwell": misago is the osprey, a seabird that catches fish.
Second line "growing round the rocky shore": isomi means the area around the rocks.
Third line "the 'tell-not-your-name' weed": nanoriso is the old name for gulfweed, punning on "do not tell your name." Up to here is the preface leading to "name."
Fourth line "yet do tell me now your name": norasu is the honorific of noru, "to tell." The sentence breaks here.
Fifth line "though your parents come to know": tomo is concessive, ending with the strength of his suit.
