English Translation
Crossing over it,
Mount Shiotsu, as I go,
the horse I ride on
has stumbled upon the path—
those at home must long for me.
Meaning
As I cross over Mount Shiotsu, the horse I ride stumbles—the people at home must be longing for me.
Commentary
Book Three Miscellaneous Poems 365

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Two poems composed by Kasa no Ason Kanamura on Mount Shiotsu"
Pairing with the preceding poem, this too was composed while crossing Mount Shiotsu. Drawing on the belief of the time that a horse's stumbling was a sign that those at home were longing for the rider, it expresses a traveler's thoughts of his family far away. After the bold tone of the preceding poem, it turns to the traveler's unease and yearning for home.
The poet, Kasa no Kanamura, was a court poet of the reign of Shōmu who composed many long and short poems while accompanying royal excursions.

First line "Mount Shiotsu" is the pass from Ōmi into Echizen.
Second line "Crossing over it, as I go": uchi is a prefix adding force.
Third line "the horse I ride on" means the horse he is riding.
Fourth line "has stumbled upon the path": zo is an emphatic binding particle; the sentence breaks here.
Fifth line "those at home must long for me": rashi is inferential and mo exclamatory, drawing on the folk belief.
