Book Three Elegies 417
Headnote: "Three poems composed by Princess Tamochi when Prince Kafuchi was buried on Mount Kagami in the province of Buzen"
This is the first of Princess Tamochi's three poems. Was it because the place suited the prince's gentle spirit that he chose Mount Kagami in Buzen as his tomb? she wonders, reaching toward the departed prince's heart. Her grief shows in the effort to accept his burial in far-off Tsukushi as the prince's own choice. Prince Kafuchi went down to Tsukushi as Governor-General of Dazaifu and is thought to have died around the eighth year of Empress Jitō (694).
Princess Tamochi's three poems are a sequence of elegies for Prince Kafuchi, who died in Tsukushi as Governor-General of Dazaifu and was buried on Mount Kagami in Buzen.
The poet, Princess Tamochi, is thought to have been the wife of Prince Kafuchi, a woman of the early Nara period, but little is known of her.
First line "Did our lord's" refers here to Prince Kafuchi.
Second line "gentle spirit find this place its match": nikitama is the gentle, peaceful working of a spirit; ae is the conditional of au, "to suit," and ya interrogative, concluded by the attributive sadamuru at the end.
Third line "that in Toyokuni": Toyokuni is the old name for Buzen and Bungo.
Fourth line "he has chosen Kagami mountain": a mountain in Buzen, in present-day Kawara, Tagawa District, Fukuoka.
Fifth line "as his palace home": miya likens the tomb to a palace—his eternal dwelling.
