Book Four Love Poems 494
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems from the time Tanabe no Imiki Ichihiko was appointed to the Dazaifu"
The third of the four poems says that the more the speaker's longing grows, the more he resents the person who introduced him to his beloved. The paradoxical grudge, that had they never met he would not suffer so, reveals the depth of a love on the eve of parting. The original gives no author, but since the speaker says "my beloved," the poem is taken to be by the man, Tanabe no Ichihiko.
The author, Tanabe no Ichihiko, was an official of the early Nara period who went down to Tsukushi as an officer of the Dazaifu. Imiki is his hereditary title.
First line, "My beloved one," renders wagimoko, a word men used fondly for a wife or sweetheart, marking the poem as spoken by a man.
Second line, "the one who brought us to meet," means caused to know each other; shime is causative and shi the attributive of the past auxiliary ki.
Third line, "that one, above all," refers to the go-between and singles that person out with koso, which is closed by the perfective omoe in the fifth line.
Fourth line, "as my longing grows, I find," means because my love increases, -ba after the perfective marking a definite condition.
Fifth line, "bitter, and resent in thought," means I think of with resentment, ending in the perfective as koso requires; urameshimi is an adjective stem with the suffix mi.
