Book Four Love Poems 638
Headnote: "Another poem sent by Prince Yuhara"
Though they were apart only one night, he felt as if a whole month had passed and his heart was thrown into confusion, exaggerating the length of time without her. It deftly captures a lover's sense of time.
The author, Prince Yuhara, was a son of Prince Shiki and a poet of the Nara period known for the fresh clarity of his style.
First line, "Just a single night," means only one night.
Second line, "kept apart from you, and yet," uses kara ni, "merely because": just from being apart.
Third line, "as the new moon turns," is aratama no, a pillow word for "month" and "year."
Fourth line, "'has a whole month passed?' I thought," uses the questioning ka: has a month gone by?
Fifth line, "and my heart was all confused," uses the perfective nu: my heart was thrown into disarray.
