Book Four Love Poems 662
Headnote: "A poem by Prince Ichihara"
The girl who spread her scoop net at Cape Sade, hidden deep behind the folds of Mount Ago in Shima, appears to the poet in his dreams. It seems he dreamed of a fishing girl glimpsed on his travels. The place name Sade and sade, "scoop net," are played against each other.
The author, Prince Ichihara, was a son of Prince Aki and a great-grandson of Prince Shiki.
First line, "Ago's mountain range," names a mountain thought to be at Ago in Shima.
Second line, "hides it deep in hundred folds," means hiding it many times over.
Third line, "Sade's jutting cape," names a cape in Shima; its sound leads to sade, "net," in the fourth line, forming a preface with the first line.
Fourth line, "there the girl who spread her net," uses sade, a small net for scooping fish: the girl who spread her net.
Fifth line, "comes to me within my dreams," means appears in my dreams, ending in the attributive.
