Book Four Love Poems 668
Headnote: "A poem by Prince Atsumi"
Like the white clouds that drift past the hills coloring day by day, he says, she is not one he could easily forget. With autumn hills and white clouds as its preface, it expresses an unforgettable love.
The author, Prince Atsumi, was a member of the imperial family in the Nara period of whom little is known.
First line, "Morning after morning," means every morning, every day.
Second line, "on the hills that turn to gold," means the hills coloring with autumn leaves.
Third line, "white clouds drift and pass," names the white clouds; since clouds pass, they lead to sugu, "to pass," in the fourth line, the first three lines forming a preface.
Fourth line, "yet you are not one of those," means one whom my thoughts should pass by.
Fifth line, "I could let pass from my thoughts," runs to eight syllables: you are not such a one.
