Headnote: "A poem sent by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi to a young girl"
He dreamed of a girl who has just put on the hanekazura, the headdress marking coming of age, and secretly goes on longing for her in his heart. It expresses in the form of a dream a faint love for a girl just grown up. The girl answers in the next poem.
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito and a poet thought to have been deeply involved in compiling the Man'yōshū. He later rose to the rank of Middle Counselor.

First line, "With the hanekazura," names a hair ornament girls put on when they reached marriageable age.
Second line, "newly set upon your hair," means you who now wear it.
Third line, "I saw you in a dream," means seeing in a dream.
Fourth line, "and within my heart I go," means inwardly, without showing it.
Fifth line, "on and on in longing still," means I go on longing, the same last line as poem 597 and others in this book.
