夜昼といふ別き知らず我が恋ふる
心はけだし夢に見えきや
Roma-ji

Yoru hiru to iu waki shirazu aga kouru kokoro wa kedashi ime ni mieki ya

English Translation
Night or day, to me
there's no difference between,
as I long for you;
might this heart, perhaps, have shown
itself to you in your dreams
Meaning
I long for you with no distinction of night and day; did this heart of mine, perhaps, appear to you in your dreams?
Commentary
Book Four Love Poems 716

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Seven poems sent by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi to a maiden"
He loves her with no distinction of night and day; did that heart, he asks, perhaps appear to her in her dreams? It rests on the belief that one who loves intensely appears in the beloved's dreams.
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito and a poet thought to have been deeply involved in compiling the Man'yōshū. He later rose to the rank of Middle Counselor.

First line, "Night or day, to me," names night and day.
Second line, "there's no difference between," means without any distinction.
Third line, "as I long for you," means with which I long.
Fourth line, "might this heart, perhaps, have shown," uses kedashi, "perhaps."
Fifth line, "itself to you in your dreams," uses the past ki and questioning ya: did it appear in your dream?
