Book Four Love Poems 737
Headnote: "Two poems sent to Yakamochi by the same Elder Daughter"
Whatever people may say, she vows, they will meet later, as the name of Mount Nochise ("later shoal") foretells. The sound nochi of the mountain in Wakasa draws out "later we shall meet." Yakamochi's reply also names Mount Nochise.
The author, Ōtomo no Sakanoue no Ōiratsume, was the daughter of Ōtomo no Sukunamaro and Lady Sakanoue, and later became Ōtomo no Yakamochi's principal wife.
First line, "Let the people talk," means this way and that.
Second line, "say whatever they may say," uses the concessive tomo: though people talk.
Third line, "on the Wakasa road," means the road to Wakasa.
Fourth line, "Nochise Mountain stands; as named," names Mount Nochise in Wakasa; its nochi leads to "later" in the last line, forming a preface with the third line.
Fifth line, "later, love, we two shall meet," means we shall meet later, my love, ending on a noun.
