Book Four Love Poems 768
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Two more poems sent by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi to the Elder Daughter"
At the Kuni capital where the emperor now reigns, it has been long since he saw his wife, and he wants to go to her soon.
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito and a poet thought to have been deeply involved in compiling the Man'yōshū. He later rose to the rank of Middle Counselor.
First line, "At the Kuni court," uses shirasu, honorific of "to rule": where he now reigns.
Second line, "where our sovereign rules us now," names the Kuni capital.
Third line, "not seeing my wife," runs to six syllables.
Fourth line, "it has been so very long," means it has grown long; the poem breaks after this line.
Fifth line, "I would go and see her soon," uses na, a wish: I want to go and see her soon.
