Book Four Love Poems 790
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Two more poems sent by Yakamochi to Fujiwara no Asomi Kusumaro"
If he will speak out plainly, like the sound of the spring breeze, then in time, even if not now, it shall be as he wishes: Yakamochi gives his answer to the proposal. It shares the phrase ima narazu tomo, "even if not now," with Princess Takata's poem 541.
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was the son of Ōtomo no Tabito and a poet thought to have been deeply involved in compiling the Man'yōshū. He later rose to the rank of Middle Counselor.
First line, "Like the breeze of spring," leads through the breeze's sound to "aloud" in the second line.
Second line, "if you speak it out aloud," uses the emphatic shi: if you voice it.
Third line, "as time passes by," names arisaru, time going on.
Fourth line, "even if it's not just now," is the same as the last line of poem 541.
Fifth line, "it shall be as you desire," means according to your wish, closing with consent to the match.
