Book Five Miscellaneous Poems 867
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "My thoughts of you are not yet exhausted; two more poems"
The poet says that many days have passed since his friend left, and even the trees in the garden of his Nara residence have grown aged and hallowed. Through the trees of a garden without its master, he conveys the length of Tabito's absence. The first two lines are identical to Empress Iwanohime's poem 85 in Book Two.
The headnote reads "My thoughts of you are not yet exhausted; two more poems," and these were written after the letter and the two preceding poems to add feelings still unspent. The left note is dated the tenth day of the seventh month of Tenpyō 2.
The poet, Kichita no Yoroshi, is said to have descended from immigrants from Paekche. He was originally a monk named Eshun, but returned to lay life by imperial order and was granted the name Kichita no Muraji. Skilled in medicine, he later served as Head of the Bureau of Books and Drawings, among other posts.
First line, "kimi ga yuki": "since you departed," the same opening as poem 85 in Book Two.
Second line, "ke nagaku narinu": "ke" means days; many days have passed. The poem breaks here.
Third line, "Naraji naru": "which is in Nara," the location of Tabito's residence in the capital.
Fourth line, "shima no kodachi mo": "shima" is a landscaped garden with a pond and artificial hills.
Fifth line, "kamusabi ni keri": "kamusabu" means to grow old and hallowed, and "keri" exclaims. He sees the passage of time in the trees of a masterless garden.
