Masurao no yuzue furiokoshi karitaka no nobe sae kiyoku teru tsukuyo kamo

大夫の弓末振り起し狩高の
野辺さへ清く照る月夜かも

Roma-ji: Masurao no yuzue furiokoshi karitaka no nobe sae kiyoku teru tsukuyo kamo
English Translation: As a brave warrior
lifts high his bow's upper tip,
so over Karitaka
even the fields are shining
in the clear light of the moon
Meaning: Like a warrior raising the tip of his bow for the hunt—so it is at Karitaka, where even the far fields lie bathed in the clear light of this moonlit night.

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On the Moon"
This poem praises a moonlit night that shines clearly even over the fields of Karitaka. The first two lines, picturing a warrior on the hunt, form an introductory phrase leading to the place name "Karitaka," and the poem generously celebrates moonlight spreading all the way to the distant fields.
Karitaka is thought to be the plain at the foot of Mount Takamado, east of the capital at Nara. Within the group on the moon, the mood shifts from regret at the moon's setting in the preceding poem to praise of its clear brightness. The poet is unknown.

The first line, "As a brave warrior," refers to a fine, valiant man and calls up the figure of a hunter.
The second line, "lifts high his bow's upper tip," describes raising the top end of the bow, ready to loose an arrow in the hunt. Together with the first line it forms an introductory phrase leading to "kari" (hunt).
The third line, "Karitaka," is a place name that picks up "kari" from the introductory phrase. It is thought to refer to the area at the foot of Mount Takamado.
In the fourth line, "even the fields are shining," the particle "sae" (even) adds that not only nearby places but also the distant fields are lit, showing how widely the moonlight reaches.
The final line closes with the noun "tsukuyo" and the exclamatory "kamo." "Tsukuyo" means the moon itself or a night lit by the moon.
