Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1140
Headnote: "Composed in Settsu"
Traveling across the plain of Inano, the poet sees evening mist rising over Mount Arima and has no lodging for the night. The anxiety of a traveler wrapped in dusk and fog comes through in a spare description of the scene.
It is the first poem under the heading "Composed in Settsu." The text adds a variant, "One book says: As I came rowing along the bays of Ina," showing that some copies told of a sea journey rather than a land route. The poet is unknown.
The first line uses "shinagadori" as a pillow word for "Ina."
The second line, "through Inano as I came," means crossing the plain of Inano in Settsu.
The third line names Mount Arima, northwest of Settsu, in the north of present-day Kobe.
In the fourth line, the perfective "nu" states decisively that the evening mist has risen, and the poem pauses here.
The final line, "and I have no place to stay," is added by inversion, leaving the traveler's unease as a lingering overtone.
