if only I had a house!
Out at sea, near land,

Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1150
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed in Settsu"
The poet wishes he had a house on the shore at Suminoe, where he could watch and enjoy the white waves rolling in both offshore and near the beach. Praise for the beauty of the Suminoe sea takes the form of a wish to live there.
It is one of the poems composed in Settsu, set among the poems on Suminoe. The poet is unknown.
The first line names Suminoe in Settsu.
In the second line, "mo ga" is a particle of wishing: "if only there were a house on the shore." The poem pauses here.
The third line, "Out at sea, near land," means both offshore and by the beach.
The fourth line, "the white waves that come rolling in," describes the breaking waves.
The final line, "I would watch and cherish them," is the same as the last line of poem 1106 in this book.
