Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1153
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed in Settsu"
The poet can never forget the happy memory of halting his horse on the beach at Nago in Suminoe and gathering bright pebbles. The poem carries nostalgia for a moment on a beach during the journey.
It is one of the poems composed in Settsu; the beach at Nago is thought to be part of the Suminoe shore. The following poems also sing of the beach at Nago, or Ago. The poet is unknown.
The first line names Suminoe in Settsu.
The second line, "on the beach of Nago shore," names the beach at Nago in Suminoe.
The third line, "I stayed my horse," means he halted his mount.
In the fourth line, "shiku" is the nominalized form of the past auxiliary "ki": "that I gathered pebbles."
In the final line, "e" expresses possibility and "zu" negation: "I can never forget."
