Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1179
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on Journeys"
The poet says that when he returns home he will long for the beauty of the moonlit night shining over the low sedge of Inami Plain. Still on his journey, he already anticipates the nostalgia he will feel.
It continues Inami Plain from the preceding poem; where that poem learned from the boat that Inami Plain had been passed, this one praises the beauty of a moonlit night on the plain. The poet is unknown.
The first line, "When I'm home again," means "once I am back at home."
In the second line, "na" is exclamatory: "how I shall long for it!" The poem pauses here.
The third line names Inami Plain, as in the preceding poem.
The fourth line, "over the low sedge grasses," refers to the short cogon grass.
The final line, "the moon that shone that night," gives by inversion the object of his longing.
