English Translation
In the morning calm
with full oars we rowed away,
watching as we came—
now the pines of Mitsu shore
across the waves I see
Meaning
We rowed out with full oars in the morning calm, watching them as we came—and now the pine groves of Mitsu appear across the waves.
Commentary
Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1185

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on Journeys"
Having rowed out in the morning calm, watching them as they went, the poet now sees the pine groves of Mitsu at Naniwa far off across the waves. The receding pines of the harbor carry the reluctance of a traveler leaving home behind.
It is one of the poems composed on journeys, singing of a voyage that set out from Mitsu at Naniwa. Mitsu also appears in poem 1151 in this book. The poet is unknown.

The first line, "In the morning calm," refers to the stillness of the sea at dawn.
The second line, "with full oars we rowed away," means rowing out with oars on both sides.
The third line, "watching as we came," means gazing all the way.
The fourth line names the pine groves on the beach of Mitsu at Naniwa.
The final line, "across the waves I see," conveys the distance now opened up.
