Book Seven Miscellaneous Poems 1236
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on Journeys"
The beloved appears again and again, but only in dreams, and like the waves breaking over the rocks at Takashima, thoughts of her come without end. The waves of the third and fourth lines symbolize a longing that surges without cease.
It is regarded as coming from the Old Collection. Takashima lies on the northwest shore of Lake Biwa in Ōmi and also appears in poems 1171 and 1172 in this book. The poet is unknown.
The first line, "Only in my dreams," means "in dreams alone."
The second line, "again and again you appear," means appearing continually.
The third line names Takashima in Ōmi, the same place as in poems 1171 and 1172.
The fourth line, "and like the waves that break on the rocks," together with the third forms an introductory phrase leading to "shikushiku."
In the final line, "shikushiku" means again and again, without pause.
