Amakumo no tanabiku yama no komoritaru aga shitagokoro ko no ha shiruramu

English Translation
As heavenly clouds
trail across the mountainside
and hide it from view,
so the heart I keep concealed—
the leaves of the trees must know
Meaning
Like the mountain hidden where the clouds of heaven trail, the secret heart I keep concealed—surely the leaves of the trees must know it.
Commentary
Book Seven Allegorical Poems 1304

Headnote: "On Trees"
The poet says that the secret heart he keeps hidden, like a mountain veiled in clouds, must be known to the leaves of the trees. The leaves are taken to stand for the one he loves, expressing the hope that though his love is hidden from others, she at least must know it.
It is the first poem under the heading "On Trees," and with the next poem, 1305, it forms a pair of poems on "the leaves of the trees." According to the left note it comes from the Kakinomoto no Hitomaro Collection.

The first line, "As heavenly clouds," refers to the clouds of the sky.
The second line, "trail across the mountainside," completes a preface that leads into "hide it" in the third line.
The third line, "and hide it from view," means "being hidden."
The fourth line, "so the heart I keep concealed," refers to the poet's innermost feelings.
In the final line, "ramu" expresses present conjecture: "they must know." It shares the word "leaves" with the third line of the next poem.
