Book Seven Allegorical Poems 1395
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "On Seaweed"
The nanoriso weed on the rugged shore where the offshore waves break has become a barrier in the poet's heart. "Nanoriso" carries the sense of "na-nori-so," "do not tell the name"; being told not to reveal the beloved's name weighs on the heart, and the poem expresses a love that cannot be shown.
It is the second of the poems "On Seaweed," and the next poem also takes up the nanoriso weed. Following the weed on the rocky shore in the preceding poem, it turns to the nanoriso growing on the rugged coast. The poet is unknown.
The first line, "Waves from the offshore," refers to the waves of the open sea.
The second line, "beating on the rocky coast," has an extra syllable.
The third line names the nanoriso seaweed, with a pun on "do not tell the name"; the same word appears in the third line of the next poem.
The fourth line, "deep within my heart it lies," places the barrier in the heart.
The final line, "as a barrier, holding back," means it has become an impediment.
