Commentary
Book Eight Spring Miscellaneous Poems 1423

Headnote: "A poem by the Middle Counselor Lord Abe no Hironiwa"
The poet rejoices that a young plum tree, dug up with its roots last spring and moved to his garden, has come into flower for the first time. A year of waiting is gathered into the single line "has burst into flower."
The author, Abe no Hironiwa, was a son of the Minister of the Right Abe no Miushi and rose to the post of Middle Counselor.

The first line, "last spring," marks when the tree was planted and weaves the passage of a year into the poem. 1430 of this book also opens with "last spring," and the two share the way they sing of this year's blossoms against the memory of last year.
In the second line, "ikozu" means to dig up with the roots. "I" is a prefix, suggesting the care taken in transplanting the tree.
The third line refers to the poet's own garden.
The fourth line names a young plum only recently planted. Because the tree is young, one senses the poet's worry over whether it would bloom.
The final line, with the perfective "ni" and exclamatory "keri," expresses joy and deep feeling at the blossoming.
