Book Eight Spring Miscellaneous Poems 1427
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Four poems by Yamabe no Sukune Akahito"
On the field he had marked off, eager to pick young greens from tomorrow, snow has kept falling yesterday and today. The poem conveys both a heart impatient for spring and frustration with a winter that will not leave.
The author, Yamabe no Akahito, was a court poet of the early Nara period. He excelled at pure, clear landscape poems and was later ranked alongside Kakinomoto no Hitomaro.
The poem was later included in the first book of spring poems of the Shin Kokin Wakashū, in a slightly altered form.
The first line, "from tomorrow on," announces a plan and carries a sense of eager anticipation. 1571 of this book also uses "from tomorrow on" to anticipate autumn leaves, so the hearts that wait for tomorrow in spring and in autumn echo each other.
The second line, with the volitional "mu," expresses the intention to pick young greens. "Gathering spring greens" also appears in 1421 and 1442 of this book.
In the third line, "shimu" means to mark a place as one's own.
The fourth line repeats "mo" to show that the snow has continued for days. Echoing the "tomorrow" of the first line, it fits the flow of yesterday, today, and tomorrow into one poem.
The final line ends on the continuative "tsutsu," leaving the lingering sense that the snow is still falling.
