Book Eight Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 1557
Headnote: "Three poems from a banquet at the private quarters of a nun of Toyura Temple in the old capital"
The poet regrets that the autumn bush clover blooming on the hill around which the Asuka River winds may fall in today's rain. It was sung at a banquet held at the dwelling of a nun of Toyura Temple in the old capital of Asuka, and expresses the beauty of the clover of the old capital and regret at its falling. The note says, "The above poem is by Tajihi no Mahito Kunihito."
The author, Tajihi no Kunihito, was an official of the Tajihi clan.
The first line names the river that flows through the old capital of Asuka.
The second line means "of the hill around which it winds."
The third line names the autumn clover blooming on the hill.
The fourth line means "in the rain falling today."
The final line, with the interrogative "ka," perfective "na," and conjectural "mu," regrets that they may fall. 1554 of this book ends with the same line, worrying over the leaves of Mount Mikasa falling in the showers.
