Book Eight Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 1573

Headnote: "A poem by Ōtomo no Toshikami"
Standing soaked by the autumn rain, the poet finds himself thinking of his beloved's house, humble though it may be. To one beaten by cold rain, a house that shelters from the weather, and the warmth of the person within, seem dear.
The author, Ōtomo no Toshikami, was a member of the Ōtomo clan about whom little is known.

The first line, with an extra syllable, names the cold autumn rain.
The second line means "as I stay getting soaked," the continuative "tsutsu" expressing the ongoing rain.
The third line means "humble though it is," speaking modestly of the beloved's house.
The fourth line, with the emphatic "shi," stresses "the house of my dear one."
The final line, with the spontaneous "yu" and exclamatory "kamo," expresses a longing that comes unbidden.
