Book Eight Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 1585
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Eleven poems from the banquet gathered by Tachibana no Ason Naramaro"
Seeing that the autumn leaves from the peaks of Mount Nara, brought to the banquet, fall as soon as they are taken in hand, the poet surmises that the showers must be falling without pause on the mountain. From the fragility of the leaves at hand, he imagines the showers on the distant mountain. The note says, "The above poem is by the palace attendant Agata no Inukai no Sukune Yoshio."
The author, Agata no Inukai no Yoshio, was an official of the Nara period who served as a palace attendant.
The first line names Mount Nara, north of the capital.
The second line names the autumn leaves of its peaks.
The third line states that they fall when taken, and the poem pauses here.
The fourth line, with an extra syllable and the emphatic "shi," stresses the showers.
The final line, with the inferential "rashi," surmises that they must be falling without pause. Ōtomo no Inakimi's 1553 in this book likewise sings of showers "falling without pause."
