Book Eight Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 1590
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Eleven poems from the banquet gathered by Tachibana no Ason Naramaro"
The autumn leaves fully colored by the showers of the tenth month will fall, the poet says, if the wind blows, drifting wherever it takes them. Gazing at the fragility of leaves on the point of falling, it also suggests that the end of the banquet is near. The note says, "The above poem is by Ōtomo no Sukune Ikenushi."
The author, Ōtomo no Ikenushi, was an official of the Ōtomo clan. Later, as an official of Etchū Province, he exchanged poems closely with Ōtomo no Yakamochi.
The first line names the tenth month of the lunar calendar, the first month of winter; it has an extra syllable.
The second line means "that met the showers," in the same form as "that met the cold dew" in the preceding poem.
The third line names the leaves colored by the showers.
The fourth line means "if the wind blows, they will fall," closing with the perfective "na" and conjectural "mu," and the poem pauses here.
The final line, "as the wind may take them," paints their falling at the end by inversion.
