Book Eight Autumn Miscellaneous Poems 1598
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Three autumn poems by Ōtomo no Sukune Yakamochi"
On the autumn bush clover in the fields where a stag stands in the morning, white dew lies so thick it looks like jewels. The stag standing in the morning fields and the white dew gleaming on the clover are gathered into a single scene, painting the freshness of an autumn morning. The note dates it to the eighth month of autumn, Tenpyō 15 (743).
The author, Ōtomo no Yakamochi, was a son of Ōtomo no Tabito and an official of the Nara period. He rose to the post of Middle Counselor, is thought to have been closely involved in compiling the Man'yōshū, and left more poems than anyone else in the anthology.
The first line means "of the stag," "sa" being a prefix.
The second line means "of the fields where it stands in the morning." Fumi no Umakai's 1580 in this book also sings of "the autumn clover in the fields where the stag comes to stand and cry."
The third line names the autumn clover on which the white dew lies.
The fourth line means "so that I take it for jewels." The Suruga lady-in-waiting's 1420 in this book likewise uses "so that it seems" for the conceit of mistaking falling flowers for snow.
The final line ends on a noun, using "ru," the attributive of the continuative "ri," to present at the end the beauty of the white dew on the clover.
