Commentary
Book Eight Autumn Love Poems 1622

Headnote: "Two poems given by the Elder Daughter of Ōtomo of Tamura to her younger sister, the Elder Daughter of Sakanoue"
In the evening light where autumn bush clover blooms in her garden, she wishes she could see her sister right now. It expresses a heart that pictures a loved one amid a lovely evening scene; the affection between sisters is sung in the form of a love poem.
The author, the Elder Daughter of Ōtomo of Tamura, was a daughter of Ōtomo no Sukunamaro and an elder half-sister of the Elder Daughter of Sakanoue. She is called by this name because she lived in the village of Tamura.

The first line names her own garden. 1621 before it also sings of the clover of one's garden: "the bush clover in my garden is in bloom."
The second line means "where the autumn clover blooms."
The third line means "in the evening light."
The fourth line, with the desiderative "teshika," wishes to see now, and the poem pauses here.
The final line names at the end, by inversion, what she wishes to see, strengthening her feeling for her sister.
