Headnote: "A poem composed by the Retired Sovereign"
Praising a simple house thatched with pampas plumes laid upside down and built of unbarked timber, the Retired Sovereign sings that it will last for ten thousand ages. According to the note to the next poem, it was composed at a banquet at the Saho residence of the Minister of the Left, Prince Nagaya, and expresses a blessing on the host's house.
"The Retired Sovereign" in the headnote is taken to be Empress Genshō. She was a daughter of Prince Kusakabe and reigned in the Nara period; after abdicating in favor of Emperor Shōmu, she became Retired Sovereign.
The first line names pampas grass in plume.
The second line means "thatching the roof with the plumes laid upside down."
The third line means "using logs with the bark left on."
The fourth line, "the house that was built," refers to a simple building set up for the banquet. The third and fourth lines share the words of the next poem, so the two poems praise the same house.
The final line means "for ten thousand ages," celebrating the lasting prosperity of the house and its master.
