The authorities too
have given us their leave now:
is it for tonight
only that we'll drink this wine?
Never let yourselves fall
- Meaning
- Even the authorities have given their leave; is this wine only for tonight? Surely not; so, plum blossoms, never let yourselves fall.

Book Eight Winter Love Poems 1657
Headnote: "A poem in reply"
Answering Lady Ōtomo no Sakanoue's preceding poem, which says the flowers may fall once they have drunk wine with plum blossoms floating in it, this poem replies that since even the authorities permit it, the wine is not for tonight only, and bids the plum blossoms never to fall. The note says, "The above: wine had been forbidden by the authorities, who declared that there should be no gatherings for feasting in the neighborhoods of the capital, but that drinking for pleasure by one or two intimates was permitted. On this account the one replying composed this poem," so it is based on the fact that under the ban on wine, drinking among intimates was allowed.
The author is identified in the headnote only by "a poem in reply," and the name is not known.
The first line means "even the authorities, even the court."
The second line, with the honorific "tamau" and continuative "ri," states that they have given permission, and the poem pauses here.
The third line means "for tonight only."
The fourth line, with the rhetorical "kamo," denies: is it wine to drink only tonight? No. The poem pauses again.
The final line joins the prohibitive "na" to the desiderative "kosu" and strengthens it with "yume," begging the flowers never to fall. Against the preceding poem's "they may fall," it reverses the sentiment in reply: they must not fall. The same final line appears in 1437 and 1560 of this book.
